Hannah Whelan is TAVP’s Associate Director of Programs and Strategy

Dear friends,

Today I am happy to announce that Hannah Whelan, TAVP’s Documentation and Archives Director, has been promoted to Associate Director of Programs and Strategy. This new position is vital as TAVP continues to grow and expand our reach and impact in Texas and across the US. As our mission to ethically and effectively document, preserve, and share community stories and records of loss, survival, and resistance becomes increasingly urgent, Hannah is perfect to lead TAVP’s programs and strategy at this moment. Hannah has built her career around archival advocacy that holds the U.S. government accountable for harm, and in this new role, she will use her expertise and experience to oversee all aspects of our work, including our archives, advocacy, and  community programs.

Since Hannah joined TAVP in 2022, she has been a respected, compassionate, and trusted friend, colleague, and thought partner to TAVP staff, collaborators, and community members. Hannah has overseen important upgrades to TAVP’s documentation and preservation practices and policies, as well as the ongoing rebuild of our After Violence Archive. Hannah recently co-authored two book chapters on centering principles of care and safety in archives (Council on Library and Information Resources Publication 192) and on “vulnerability” in archives for the upcoming Keywords in (Critical) Library & Information Studies/Science (MIT Press). This year Hannah also co-led the production of a short documentary film with one of our oral history narrators, which we are excited to share soon. Aside from her work with TAVP,  Hannah also collaborates on a number of projects working with sensitive text-based and oral records released through litigation with the US government or through Freedom of Information Act Requests. Most recently, she has been working with a team of archivists on the creation of a digital archive holding records related to the Trump Administration’s family separation and detention policies.

It’s clear that TAVP would not be where we are today if it wasn’t for Hannah’s dedication and vision, as well as her calm and steady presence and guidance for all of us (she recently created individualized Spotify playlists for the entire team!). Thank you, Hannah.

As always, thank you for your continued support.
