Communications Director

The Communications Director will be a strategic leader responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of the organization’s communications strategy. This role is crucial for expanding TAVP’s public presence and increasing the general awareness and impact of our mission. The Communications Director will work closely with staff, consultants, contractors, and collaborators across the organization and in our communities to ensure that all aspects of TAVP’s messaging meets the organization’s ethical standards and commitment to community-led programs, archiving, and advocacy. Additionally, the Communications Director will track developments and trends in our field and identify opportunities for TAVP to lead and collaborate on new communications approaches.

This position will report to the Executive Director.

The salary for this position is $85,000-$90,000 annually.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Communications Strategy and Planning
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to increase visibility, awareness, and support for the organization’s expanding reach and mission.
    • Create annual and long-term communication plans, with specific objectives for digital, media, and public relations outreach that take into account distribution to a diverse range of community members.
    • Conduct regular assessments to measure impact and refine the strategy as needed, including creating mechanisms for community input.

  2. Content Creation and Brand Management
    • Oversee the creation and distribution of high-quality content across various platforms, including social media, the TAVP website, our newsletters, and press releases.
    • Ensure all communications are aligned with the organization’s brand, voice, mission, and values.
    • Manage and update brand guidelines to maintain a consistent, recognizable, and accessible image.

  1. Media Relations and Public Outreach
    • Serve as the primary spokesperson and media contact for the organization.
    • Develop and nurture relationships with key media outlets, journalists, and influencers in the community-led documentation, archiving, and advocacy fields.
    • Write and distribute press releases.
    • Manage the production of op-eds and feature articles to position the organization as a thought leader in its field.
    • Respond to field-specific crises as they emerge.

  1.   Digital Marketing and Social Media Management
    • Develop a robust digital marketing strategy to grow the organization’s online presence.
    • Manage and expand the organization’s social media channels to engage a diverse audience.
    • Use data analytics to track performance and optimize content for maximum reach and engagement.
    • Collaborate with artists, activists, journalists, and educators to create and share written and visual representations of TAVP’s work on social media.

  1.   Stakeholder and Community Engagement
    • Work closely with program and development teams to craft messages that resonate with donors, volunteers, and partners.
    • Develop communication strategies that support community engagement and grassroots mobilization efforts.

  1.   Team Leadership and Development
    • Recruit, train, and manage communications interns and staff.
    • Collaborate with senior leadership to support organizational growth initiatives.

  1.   General Administrative
    • Manage info@ email account,
    • Make website updates as needed.
    • Use organizational tools, including Proton, Slack, DonorBox, and Google Analytics. 
    • Facilitate weekly team meetings on a rotating basis. 

 

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • We recognize there are a variety of ways to gain knowledge and experience beyond formal education. A college degree is NOT required for this position.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a communications role, with at least 2 years in a leadership capacity, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven track record of successful media relations and digital marketing strategy development.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with CRM, social media management tools, and data analytics platforms.
