Framing Illustrative Portraits, by Frankie

“I like to see my drawings as a vehicle for storytelling, or crafting a narrative. In representing some of the faces of TAVP, who dedicate their time collecting interviews & oral histories from victims of state violence in Texas, I wanted to connect the reality of their work with my realistic style of portraiture. I believe this style offers up another layer of materiality present in the shape, values, and orientation set in each mark. For the viewer I introduce a sort of stylized, objective viewing when ink imitates a photo. And it’s something I’d like to continue exploring in my art whether that shows up in future projects, or in casual/leisurely practice I take from, say, people-watching. It’s still a new space I’m finding my way through. And with time, as I grow a collection of people I get the chance of capturing in their character, I hope to define a way of seeing – ourselves & the larger world – that’s recognizable, accessible, and non-normative.”   – Frankie Onuorah
