Life and Death in a Carceral State: Live Storytelling Event

David Johnson stands in front of a microphone telling a story. There is a sign that reads "NORTH DOOR" behind him.

On October 15th, 2019, Texas After Violence Project joined with the Texas Observer to host a live storytelling event, Life and Death in a Carceral State, based on our documentation project of the same name. Support was provided by PEN America as well as the Judith Filler Foundation.  The evening was emceed by Michael Barajas, a staff writer covering civil rights for the Texas Observer, and began with an original poem performed by the poet-activist Jorge Antonio Renaud. This was followed by stories told by activist-advocates Maggie Luna, Mignon Zezqueaux, and David Johnson, all of whom spent several weeks working with local writer/director/storyteller Annie La Ganga to craft the stories they told. The night also included writings from Thomas Bartlett Whitaker, former death row inmate and PEN America Writing for Justice fellow (2018-2019).

Please enjoy this recording of the event, filmed by Funmi Ogunro of art is cool.
